Discover Slovenia Through Educational Travel: A Journey Beyond the Tourist Trail

Why Slovenia is the Perfect Destination for Experiential Learning

The best way to truly experience Slovenia isn’t just by snapping photos of its landmarks. It’s by stepping behind the scenes—meeting the people who shape the country, visiting places most tourists never see, and diving into its culture, industries, and hidden gems. That’s where the magic happens.

Recently, DT Slovenia had the opportunity to host a group of students from South Africa on an educational journey through Slovenia. Our team provided ground support and local expertise throughout the visit, helping the group explore the country in a way that was immersive, meaningful, and far from ordinary.

Union Brewery Ljubljana: A Taste of Slovenian Heritage

The journey kicked off in Slovenia’s charming capital, Ljubljana, with a visit to Union Brewery. Far more than a place to sample beer, Union is woven into the cultural fabric of the city. Students explored the brewery’s rich history, learned how traditional brewing techniques meet modern production, and discovered the role Union plays in shaping Slovenian identity.

And yes—there was some tasting, too. After all, understanding a culture sometimes starts with a toast.

Žito Bakery Ljubljana: Tradition Meets Innovation

Next up was Žito, the largest bakery in Slovenia. Nestled in the heart of Ljubljana, Žito is responsible for much of the bread, pastries, and baked delights enjoyed across the country. The students toured the production facility, gaining insight into how Slovenian food traditions are preserved while embracing innovation, automation, and sustainability.

From learning about product development to witnessing the technology behind large-scale baking, this stop offered a deliciously informative look into Slovenia’s food industry.

Exploring Slovenia’s Food Industry in Ptuj

In Ptuj, the country’s oldest town, history lines every cobbled street—but the students were there for a different reason. They visited Perutnina Ptuj, one of Slovenia’s leading poultry producers. Here, they learned how food processing companies maintain high-quality standards while staying competitive in global markets.

This stop offered real-world insights into food sustainability, ethical sourcing, and business operations on an international scale.

Slovenian Wine Education at Marof Wine Estate

In the tranquil hills of the Štajerska region, the group visited Marof Wine Estate. This family-run vineyard is known for producing award-winning wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the local soil and climate.

Students toured the estate and heard directly from winemakers about the slow, thoughtful process of crafting wines that tell a story. It was a reminder that excellence often comes from tradition, patience, and passion.

Beekeeping in Slovenia: The Medex Experience

Slovenia is known as the land of beekeepers—and the visit to Medex brought this tradition to life. Students learned how honey and other bee products are used not just in food, but also in wellness, beauty, and healthcare.

This was more than a sweet stop—it was an introduction to the science behind Slovenia’s thriving natural health industry.

Lake Bled: Sustainability and Tourism Education

A visit to Slovenia wouldn’t be complete without Lake Bled. But this stop wasn’t just about the iconic island and the famous Bled cream cake. Thanks to the warm welcome from Bled Business School, students explored the challenges and opportunities in sustainable tourism and destination branding.

With crystal-clear waters as a backdrop, discussions on eco-conscious travel became all the more inspiring.

Wrapping Up at Hotel Slon Ljubljana

The final stop was Hotel Slon in Ljubljana—a historic landmark that’s been welcoming guests for centuries. More than just a place to rest, the hotel offered the perfect setting for reflection.

It was here that students recapped the lessons learned, shared personal takeaways, and looked ahead to how this journey might shape their futures.
